Conversation with my Kid - The Spring Break Edition

We send our kids to Catholic school here in Los Angeles. And more than just wanting some solid academics, we wanted some God sprinkled in our kids' souls.

And even though I am totally a fan of the high academic standards the school espouses, I was uh, a little bummed, to say the least, when Claire, my 2nd-grader, was given homework to do over the 2-week Christmas break.

"WHAT??????," I said to Claire when she told me.

Oh crap, I thought. Along with everything else I had to do, I also had to NOW keep in mind that she had homework she was supposed to finish. Because really, can a 7-year-old be expected to remember her HOMEWORK over Christmas vacation?

"Well," Claire replied calmly. "Mrs. X doesn't want our brains to go to mush over the break."

Yikes, I thought. Bring on the mushy brains. If it could spare me some additional heartache, bring on the mush!!

Fast forward to yesterday....

I pick up the girls after a half-day of school excited and ready for a week plus of NO SCHOOL!

As we walked back to the van, backpacks and Easter goodies in hand, I say to Claire, "Did Mrs. X give you homework?"

"Nope," she said with a sly smile on her face.

And then she raised her arms in the air and yelled, "YESSSS!!! It's Spring Break and my brain is going to MUSH!"

Right on Mrs. X.

Both me AND Claire need some mushy brain time right about now.

  3. I can't imagine actually doing homework assigned over break, it seems to go against labor laws. Where's the Union for Students when you need them?
