On Tuesday, my 7-year-old Claire went on a field trip with her second grade class to see "Charlotte's Web" brought to life on stage. They hopped on a bus, headed to Hollywood, and Claire said she really enjoyed seeing Fern, Wilbur, Charlotte and the gang act out the story as a play.
Wednesday evening, I was hanging out on the foot of the girls' bed just chatting with them as they got ready to drift off to dreamy land. Tommy cuddled up to me and listened as we talked.
At one point in the conversation, Claire said to Phoebe, her 5-year-old lil' sister, "Phoebe, do you eat bacon?"
Phoebe said, "Yes."
Claire said, "Then you eat pig."
Phoebe said, "No, I don't."
"Yes you do.
"No, I don't."
And then Claire said, "Mama, tell Phoebe that bacon is made out of pig."
Oh, I thought to myself. She doesn't know that bacon is basically a pig. Well, no time like the present.
"Yep, Phoebes, bacon is made out of pig."
"Well," I said, "That's why in Charlotte's Web Wilbur doesn't want to go be sold. He doesn't want to be made into bacon."
And after a minute of giggling and ewwwwwwing, Claire said, "Do you like bacon Phoebe?"
Phoebe considered the new information she had just been given and replied, "Yes. I like bacon."
Claire paused for a second and then smiled slyly and said, "I like bacon too."
Sorry all you Wilburs out there. My girls still want to eat you.
If you have a conversation with YOUR kid that you would like to share, post the link on Mr. Linky below and I'll come over and check it out.
Happy Friday! And seeing that it's a Friday during Lent we're gonna do our best not to eat bacon today.
