Conversations with my Kid - The Bacon Edition

On Tuesday, my 7-year-old Claire went on a field trip with her second grade class to see "Charlotte's Web" brought to life on stage. They hopped on a bus, headed to Hollywood, and Claire said she really enjoyed seeing Fern, Wilbur, Charlotte and the gang act out the story as a play.

Wednesday evening, I was hanging out on the foot of the girls' bed just chatting with them as they got ready to drift off to dreamy land. Tommy cuddled up to me and listened as we talked.

At one point in the conversation, Claire said to Phoebe, her 5-year-old lil' sister, "Phoebe, do you eat bacon?"

Phoebe said, "Yes."

Claire said, "Then you eat pig."

Phoebe said, "No, I don't."

"Yes you do.

"No, I don't."

And then Claire said, "Mama, tell Phoebe that bacon is made out of pig."

Oh, I thought to myself. She doesn't know that bacon is basically a pig. Well, no time like the present.

"Yep, Phoebes, bacon is made out of pig."

"Well," I said, "That's why in Charlotte's Web Wilbur doesn't want to go be sold. He doesn't want to be made into bacon."

And after a minute of giggling and ewwwwwwing, Claire said, "Do you like bacon Phoebe?"

Phoebe considered the new information she had just been given and replied, "Yes. I like bacon."

Claire paused for a second and then smiled slyly and said, "I like bacon too."

Sorry all you Wilburs out there. My girls still want to eat you.

If you have a conversation with YOUR kid that you would like to share, post the link on Mr. Linky below and I'll come over and check it out.

Happy Friday! And seeing that it's a Friday during Lent we're gonna do our best not to eat bacon today.

  1. Ha! My sister loves to tell my younger siblings what animal they are eating. Her intentions are very cruel, though.

    P.S. I like bacon, too.

  2. Long time reader, first time commenter.

My son is only 13 weeks old, so he's not exactly talking words yet. I do have this funny story about my friend's 3 year old though...

Ruby: "Does Daddy think meerkats are cute?"
Her Mom: "I bet you couldn't find anyone that didn't think meerkats are cute." (pause)
Ruby: "The Nazis would not think they were cute. They would try & shoot 'em with their guns."

They had just let her watch 'The Sound of Music.'

Oh and I <3 bacon as well!!

  3. Mmmm, bacon!

This was too cute! I love these kind of conversations! Thanks for the chuckle!

  4. okay, i SERIOUSLY think it was as recent as a couple of years ago when i called bailey a turkey and he asked me, "do you mean turkey, the bird, or turkey, the food?" uhhhhh...

i love bacon, too. and i miss you!

  5. Hahaha! Being kind to animals is nice. Bacon is nicer.

  6. I think your girls and I would get along just fine.

  7. The view from the top of the food chain is so nice, ain't it?

    Bacon rocks.

    Just don't tell Youngest :-)

  8. "Bacon up that sausage, boy!" -H. Simpson

"You don't win friends with sa-lad! You don't win friends with sa-lad!"

    thanks for the smile, friend.

  9. She'll never see Charlottes Web in the same light....

Around my neices and nephews I only call the meet they are eating by the animal it comes from. That way they knew from the beginning what it was. Can't say it was the smartest thing to do....

  10. So cute.

Phoebe is a girl who knows what she likes.

  11. Here is my favorite recent conversation between a 6 year old and a year old. (It is about 6 a.m. and the 4 year old is trying to get us out of bed) - older daughter "Mom - quick - there is something big and brown on the floor in my room! I don't know what it is!" (I am thinking - great, the dog threw up on the carpet). Son replies - "Does it have a head?" Daughter - "uh, no". Son - "Because it could be Kuta (the dog) if it has a head".
    Outcome: it was vomit.
