This is Franco.
Franco is the 6-year-old son of my dear friend, Amy, who is a mom without a blog and a writer here. Franco is the sweetest, most talkative, 6-year-old lil' dude you will ever meet.
This is Franco and my lil' dude Tommy.
Tommy and Franco are both train fanatics. And Tommy looks up to Franco in all of his infinite train knowledge and track building skills.
Recently, our family and Amy's family were away for the weekend together in our local mountains to enjoy the snow.
As the adults sat around the kitchen table chatting, we kept getting interrupted by uh, kids. There are five between us.
So I said to Franco...
"Franco, if you help Tommy build a train track and keep him busy for the next 15 minutes, I'll give you a dollar."
And boy did that get Franco motivated. Off he went.
The only problem was that he kept coming back every few minutes asking us if his 15 minutes was up.
At the end of 15 minutes, he said "Ms. Lee, can I help Tommy again for another 15 minutes and earn another dollar?"
As his parents groaned at the gall of their brilliant little capitalist, I said, "Sure Franco. I'll give you another dollar for another 15 minutes."
"Can I keep making dollars for every 15 minutes I watch Tommy?"
And again his parents groaned and said "No Franco. $2 is the maximum you can make for watching Tommy."
I was intrigued at how driven and organized Franco was in his financial planning.
I said, "Wow Franco. You really like money huh? What are you gonna do with all this money you are making?"
"I'm gonna save it up Ms. Lee so whenever I see something I can not live without, I can buy it."
And with that he turned away to start earning his next dollar.
We all laughed at how quickly Franco has figured out the American way of living.
We see things we can not live without and we buy them.
If only we all worked like Franco and only used cash to buy what we could not live without, we would all be in much better shape.
I know I would.
